Translators from other analysis programs
DST has developed programs to translate input data prepared for other analysis programs to the PIPESTRESS format. These "translators" include:
Programs that translate data from the format used by one analysis program to the format used by another rarely work perfectly. There are several reasons. First, the authors of the "translators" rarely know both analysis programs. Second, translation programs need to be adapted for each new release of either of the analysis programs involved. Nevertheless, if used correctly, translators are a valuable tool in the conversion from one analysis program to another.
CONVERSION PROJECT
To maximize the value of translators during a conversion, we suggest forming a conversion team consisting of a PIPESTRESS specialist from DST's staff and one or more engineers from the licensee's staff.
This team would work together during a specified period (probably four to eight weeks). This period would be called the "initial conversion project". As part of this project, the team would convert many piping systems to the PIPESTRESS format and, at the same time, the licensee's engineers would be trained to use PIPESTRESS and to complete the conversion.
If any conversion errors are encountered, the member of DST's staff who is on the conversion team would request DST's programming staff to immediately correct or enhance the translator.
Once the initial conversion project is complete, the licensees will have successfully converted many piping problems, will have learned to use PIPESTRESS, will be familiar with members of both DST's engineering and programming staff, and will be equipped with an enhanced translator program to convert piping systems in the future.
