Occurs when :

masses of water of different temperatures enter in contact
at relatively low flow rates
in horizontal section of piping systems

 

Stratification effects calculated by PIPESTRESS :

large “banana shaped” deformation of horizontal sections of piping systems
increased loads on piping supports and component nozzles
additional cyclic stresses and fatigue in piping
